PanelPilotACE Display: Revolutionising Airborne Infection Control in Hospitals

Airborne infection control is critical in hospitals and healthcare environments, as poor indoor air quality significantly increases the risk of infection transmission. This impacts both patient recovery and the health of frontline workers. Studies show that more than 35% of infections can spread through the air, with some airborne particles remaining suspended for prolonged periods.

To address this challenge, Scientific Air Management, a Florida-based company specialising in infection control technologies, developed the S400; a portable, high-performance medical air purification system designed specifically for hospital and clinical use.

The S400 mobile unit was engineered to neutralise airborne contaminants, pathogens, and odours in high-risk healthcare environments. Whether deployed in ICUs, emergency rooms, or surgical suites, the system plays a vital role in reducing the presence of airborne infectious agents and strengthening overall airborne infection control measures.

At the heart of the unit is the PanelPilotACE SGD 43-A; a programmable TFT touchscreen display that serves as the user interface and control hub for the device.

Scientific Air Management selected the SGD 43-A display due to its programmability, flexibility, and user-friendly interface. Using the free PanelPilotACE Design Studio software, the company was able to quickly build a multi-screen interface tailored to the needs of hospital staff.

The SGD 43-A manages multiple system functions, including:

  • Fan speed control and UV bulb brightness via two PWM outputs
  • Displaying HEPA filter runtime for timely maintenance
  • Providing real-time monitoring of system status through a clean touchscreen interface

This functionality allows the S400 to operate efficiently and safely, ensuring consistent disinfection and supporting hospital airborne infection control, while giving healthcare personnel actionable real-time monitoring data.

To support high-volume production during the COVID-19 pandemic, PanelPilot also developed a custom PCB assembly to streamline manufacturing. This circuit board simplified the integration of the display within the system and significantly reduced assembly time, helping Scientific Air Management ramp up deliveries during peak demand.

PanelPilot was proud to support Scientific Air Management in delivering the S400 system to hospitals when it was needed most, providing a critical layer of protection against airborne infection during a global health crisis.
